Associated Conditions of Anorexia
| About associated conditions: Associated conditions are those which appear statistically related, but do not have a clear cause or effect relationship. Whereas the complications are caused by Anorexia, and underlying causes may be causes of Anorexia, the following list shows associated conditions that simply appear with higher frequency in people who have Anorexia. In some cases, there may be overlap between this list and risk factors for Anorexia. People with Anorexia may be more likely to get a condition on the list of associated conditions, or the reverse may be true, or both. Whether they are causes of, caused by, or simply coincidentally related to Anorexia is not always clear. For general information, see Associated Condition Misdiagnosis. |

Associated conditions: Scientists have found that many patients with anorexia also suffer from other psychiatric illnesses. While the majority have co-occurring clinical depression, others suffer from anxiety, personality or substance abuse disorders, and many are at risk for suicide. Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), an illness characterized by repetitive thoughts and behaviors, can also accompany anorexia. Individuals with anorexia are typically compliant in personality but may have sudden outbursts of hostility and anger or become socially withdrawn. 1
