Inheritance and Genetics of Autism
| About inheritance and genetics: Inheritance of Autism refers to whether the condition is inherited from your parents or "runs" in families. The level of inheritance of a condition depends on how important genetics are to the disease. Strongly genetic diseases are usually inherited, partially genetic diseases are sometimes inherited, and non-genetic diseases are not inherited. For general information, see Introduction to Genetics. |
Inheritance of Autism: Evidence suggests that some family members of people with autism may share with them milder, but qualitatively similar, behavioral characteristics of autism.1
Several studies of twins suggest that autism- or at least a higher likelihood of some brain dysfunction-can be inherited.2
Genetics of Autism:
Recent studies strongly suggest that some people
have a genetic predisposition to autism. Researchers are looking for clues
about which genes contribute to this increased susceptibility.
