Prevalence and Incidence of Bacterial vaginosis
| About prevalence and incidence statistics: The term 'prevalence' of Bacterial vaginosis usually refers to the estimated population of people who are managing Bacterial vaginosis at any given time. The term 'incidence' of Bacterial vaginosis refers to the annual diagnosis rate, or the number of new cases of Bacterial vaginosis diagnosed each year. Hence, these two statistics types can differ: a short-lived disease like flu can have high annual incidence but low prevalence, but a life-long disease like diabetes has a low annual incidence but high prevalence. For more information see about prevalence and incidence statistics. |
Prevalance of Bacterial vaginosis: 16% of pregnant women (DSTD)
Prevalance Rate: approx 1 in 424 or 0.24% or 640,000 people in USA [about data]
Prevalance of Bacterial vaginosis: Scientific studies suggest that BV is common in women of reproductive age. In the United States, as many as 16% of pregnant women have BV. This varies by race and ethnicity from 6% in Asians and 9% in whites to 16% in Hispanics and 23% in African Americans. BV is generally more commonly seen in women attending STD clinics than in those attending family planning or prenatal clinics. 1
