Prevalence and Incidence of Brainerd diarrhea

About prevalence and incidence statistics: The term 'prevalence' of Brainerd diarrhea usually refers to the estimated population of people who are managing Brainerd diarrhea at any given time. The term 'incidence' of Brainerd diarrhea refers to the annual diagnosis rate, or the number of new cases of Brainerd diarrhea diagnosed each year. Hence, these two statistics types can differ: a short-lived disease like flu can have high annual incidence but low prevalence, but a life-long disease like diabetes has a low annual incidence but high prevalence. For more information see about prevalence and incidence statistics.

Incidence (annual) of Brainerd diarrhea: estimated 5,000-8,000 patients (DBMD)
Incidence Rate: approx 1 in 54,400 or 0.00% or 5,000 people in USA [about data]
Prevalance of Brainerd diarrhea: An estimated 5,000-8,000 patients with chronic diarrhea clinically similar to Brainerd diarrhea are cared for by U.S. gastroenterologists each year. Approximately every 2 years, CDC investigates an outbreak of Brainerd diarrhea affecting 50-100 people. 1

Prevelance of Brainerd diarrhea discussion: Seven outbreaks of Brainerd diarrhea have been reported since 1983. Six occurred in the United States, five of which were in rural settings. One outbreak occurred on a South American cruise ship based in the Galapagos Islands. The original Brainerd outbreak, which involved 122 persons, was the largest outbreak. An outbreak in Henderson County, Illinois, involved 72 persons; the Galapagos Islands outbreak involved 58. A survey of gastroenterologists suggested that many patients who are not associated with a recognized outbreak seek treatment for illness compatible with Brainerd diarrhea. Further work needs to be done to establish the incidence of sporadic cases of Brainerd diarrhea. 2
