Autoimmune: Diseases where the immune system attacks normal healthy tissue
Introduction: Autoimmune diseases are caused by a malfunctioning immune system leading to self-attacks or self-stimulation of other body cells. There are more than 100 different types of autoimmune disease. Although the majority are caused by a direct attack by the immune system (usually T-cells) against healthy body cells, not all autoimmune diseases are of this type. Autoimmune diseases are not normally contagious (see contagion of autoimmune diseases).
