Undiagnosed Type 1 diabetes

About undiagnosed conditions: One possible misdiagnosis is the failure to correctly diagnose Type 1 diabetes leading to a person remaining with undiagnosed Type 1 diabetes. Any condition can potentially be missed and stay undiagnosed. For a general overview of diseases that are often undiagnosed, see Failure to Diagnose or Under-Diagnosed Diseases.

Undiagnosed Type 1 diabetes: There is always a lot of publicity about people having undiagnosed diabetes, as much as 4% of the population in the USA. However, this refers to the slower-onset Type 2 diabetes which typically has milder symptoms than Type 1 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes symptoms usually arise and progress rapidly over the course of weeks or a few months, so most cases of Type 1 diabetes are quickly diagnosed. The symptoms of Type 1 diabetes become so extreme that the need for a doctor's visit for a diagnosis cannot be overlooked for long (though Type 1 diabetes can be misdiagnosed as other things).
