| About associated conditions: Associated conditions are those which appear statistically related, but do not have a clear cause or effect relationship. Whereas the complications are caused by Genital herpes, and underlying causes may be causes of Genital herpes, the following list shows associated conditions that simply appear with higher frequency in people who have Genital herpes. In some cases, there may be overlap between this list and risk factors for Genital herpes. People with Genital herpes may be more likely to get a condition on the list of associated conditions, or the reverse may be true, or both. Associated conditions: Genital herpes, like other genital diseases that produce sores, increases a person’s risk of getting HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. Also, prior to better treatments for AIDS, persons with HIV (because of lower protection from their immune systems) had severe herpes outbreaks, which may have helped them pass both genital herpes and HIV infections to others. 1
