Introduction: Hantavirus

Hantavirus: Rodent-borne viral infection

Hantavirus: In 1993, an outbreak of a mysterious, often fatal lung disease occurred in the southwestern United States. That outbreak occurred in part from weather changes like those brought about by El Niņo, which fosters increases in the rodent populations that carry diseases. Scientists quickly determined the illness was caused by a previously unknown strain of hantavirus, a family of disease-causing viruses that occurs naturally in mice and other rodents. By April 2001, health care workers had reported that 283 people had developed the condition known as hantavirus pulmonary syndrome. More than a third have died from the disease. 1
