Medical News Summary (summary of medical news story as reported by Science Daily): A report in Clinical Immunology indicates that the thiazolidineione class of anti-diabetic medications (PPAR-gamma ligands) bind to proteins associated with myeloma and other cancers which destroy the cells. This has been observed in animal trials and if it succeeds in humans it may be an effective targeted therapy for a difficult to treat condition. This drug was even more effective when combined with compounds akin to Vitamin A. Multiple myelomas comprise about 10% of blood cancers in the US. Multiple myeloma is treated with high-dose chemotherapy and stem-cell transplant. Other recent treatments include thalidomide and Velcade a proteosome inhibitor. The use of anti-diabetic medication may provide another potential therapy.
