Medical News Summary (summary of medical news story as reported by CBS News): Recent studies have found several negative effects of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) such as Prozac when taken by children. SSRI’s are believed to be linked to an increased risk of depression and anxiety disorders during adulthood. They may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts in children and adolescents and most recently, they may cause bone weakness during adulthood. Psychiatrists believe that these risks need to be weighed up against the risks of severe depression.
