Medical News Summary (summary of medical news story as reported by The Washington Times): Researchers from Seattle and Michigan claim problems with blood flow to the brain is the cause of mixed dementia which is really a combination of Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia. This form accounts for almost 20% of American dementia patients. Symptoms of Alzheimer’s and mixed dementia include memory loss, confusion, wandering and difficulty following directions. High blood pressure and high cholesterol can damage blood vessels to the brain causing eventual death of some brain cells. Alzheimer’s disease can also damage blood vessels to the brain and thus increase the risk of stroke. Thus, researchers believe that sufferers of mixed dementia are helped more by blood pressure and cholesterol lowering drugs than Alzheimer’s drugs.
