Medical News Summary (summary of medical news story as reported by EurekAlert): Recent research results has led to the belief that the protein adiponectin may be implicated in obesity, diabetes and heart disease. New research funded by the NIH indicate that low adinopectin concentrations in the blood may be a sign of increased risk of cardiovascular disease in people with type 1 diabetes mellitus. It is believed to produce more accurate predictions than markers for inflammation and insulin resistance. Previous studies have only assessed the impact of adiponectin in people with type 2 diabetes or without diabetes. Adinopectin is a fat specific protein which acts as an anti-inflammatory compound. The new discoveries about the implications of adinopectin may pave the way for new prevention or treatment therapies.
