Medical News Summary (summary of medical news story as reported by Cancerwise): A study involving the breast cancer drug Advexin caused an average tumor size reduction of almost 80% when subjects took the drug in conjunction with traditional chemotherapy prior to surgery. The reduced tumor size meant that patients could then choose to have a lumpectomy (removal of the tumor only) instead of a mastectomy where the whole breast is removed. Lymph node tumors also showed a significant decrease in size. Advexin operates by introducing a viral agent which increases the supply of the p53 gene which can destroy cancer cells. The tumor cells then appeared to produce even more of the p53 gene which means that the drug could potentially deliver a long term beneficial effect by sustaining the local immune system response.
