Medical News Summary (summary of medical news story as reported by Nutra Ingredients): A UK survey found that 19% of girls and 9% of boys aged 15 to 18 were consuming insufficient calcium from their diet and thus face the risk of failing to obtain maximum bone mass at the age of 20-25. This in turn increases their risk of osteoporosis later in life. Short-term calcium supplementation during adolescence in females has been found in studies to help increase peak bone mass. Supplementation had the greatest effect if it was taken during the growth spurt that occurs at puberty. After this, the benefits were less.
