Medical News Summary (summary of medical news story as reported by PR Newswire): Treatment in the form of a capsule has been tested on bipolar patients. The capsule contains carbamazepine which is released slowly from the capsule. The study group found the treatment effective, safe and tolerable. It did not have any side effects related to weight gain or blood sugar changes but did have some minor initial incidences of dizziness, somnolence, nausea, vomiting and loss of coordination. Current medications are usually ineffective or not tolerable by the patient. So far two trials have been done at the North Carolina University. Conditions associated with bipolar disease include manic phases, depression, irritability, anxiety disorders, attention deficit disorders and substance abuse.
