Medical News Summary (summary of medical news story as reported by CBS News): A study by Texas researchers involving 40 women found that the commonly used arthritis drug, Celebrex, may help prevent the formation, growth and spread of breast cancer. Celebrex works by interrupting the early stages of breast cancer formation. Tamoxifen is the only approved drug for breast cancer prevention but it carries the risk of side effects such as uterine cancer. Other studies have also indicated that Celebrex may prevent prostate cancer also. Further studies are being done to further this development. Researchers have found that Celebrex does not carry the same risk of heart attacks as Vioxx did.
