Medical News Summary (summary of medical news story as reported by New Kerala): Scientists at Purdue University claim that the type of Vitamin E found in many plant seeds (walnuts, pecans, sesame seeds, corn, sesame oil) might slow the growth of prostate and lung cancer cells. The Vitamin E found in nutritional supplements does not appear to have the same affect. In laboratory trials, the vitamin E (gamma-tocopherol) was able to stop the synthesis of sphingolipids which make up cell membranes. Only cancer cells were targeted thus no healthy tissue was damaged. This type of Vitamin E may prevent inflammation and may thus be useful in cancer and cardiovascular disease therapies.
