Medical News Summary (summary of medical news story as reported by Science Blog): Scientists from the University of Michigan have found that the compound called benzodiazepine-423 (related to the anti-anxiety drugs Valiuma and Zanaxa) can suppress cell growth in psoriasis. Over 4.5 million US people suffer from psoriasis or the associated form of arthritis and it costs the country up to $4.3 billion annually. Current topical steroid treatments are nonselective steroid treatments cause damage to normal tissues if used for a long time. Another treatment involves injections which is expensive, inconvenient and more prone to side effects. The new compound may be applied topically and is selective. This compound may also have the potential to be used in combination with Retin-A for acne and skin damage treatment. Retin-A on its own often causes symptoms similar to psoriasis. Benzodiazepine has previously been shown to have some beneficial effects in treating lupus.
