Medical News Summary (summary of medical news story as reported by Medical News Today): The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (UK) has released an updated advice on the contraceptive Depo-Provera. It states that: adolescents should use Depo-Provera only as a last resort; adults should re-evaluate whether they should be using the product especially if they intend on using it for more than two years; and women at risk of osteoporosis should attempt to use other forms of contraceptive. The Committee on Safety of Medicines notes that Depo-Provera does reduce the bone mineral density of many patients. It is still unknown what the long term effects of this are and if they are reversible. Further research is to be done to define the risks.
