It causes nerve damage resulting in pain or a tingling feeling. Sensory perception may also be lost in the affected areas. Researchers have found that doses of acetyl-L-carnitine three times a day helps to alleviate diabetic neuropathy pain. Acetyl-L-carnitine is a naturally occurring substance that is used in many dietary supplements. The most significant pain improvement after one year occurred in those with type 2 diabetes, those who adhered to their medication regimen religiously, those who didn’t control their diabetes very well and those who had diabetes for the shortest time. Nerve structure improvement also occurred in those who had the shortest duration of diabetes. Further studies need to be done to determine the nutriet benefits and to determine whether early treatment slows the progression and severity of diabetic neuropathy.
