Medical News Summary (summary of medical news story as reported by Reuters Health): Diabetic women are more likely to suffer re-clogging of arteries following a coronary artery stent than diabetic men. Thus, woman would probably benefit more from coronary bypass surgery and anti-platelet drugs or drug-eluting stents to avoid re-clogging of arteries. Six months after stenting, diabetic women faced a 50% greater risk of arterial re-clogging than nondiabetic women whereas there was no such difference when diabetic men were compared to nondiabetic men. The increased risk of blood clots in women may be due to the effect diabetes has on menopause-related vascular alterations.
