Medical News Summary (summary of medical news story as reported by Reuters Health): Research suggests that people with type 2 diabetes are more likely to die after having coronary artery bypass graft surgery than people without diabetes. Study results found that 3.9% of diabetics died following the surgery compared to 2.6% of non-diabetics. Diabetics also had the added disadvantage of having longer hospital stays, more kidney and wound complications and higher incidence of heart weakness. Researchers say that this increased negative effects observed in diabetics is caused by the effects of high blood sugar and increased fatty acids.
