Medical News Summary (summary of medical news story as reported by Reuters Health): A report in the Archives of Internal Medicine claims that aspirin is underused by those it could help. Aspirin taken daily is known to reduce the risk of heart disease in those prone to the condition. Diabetics are prone to heart disease and as such should be taking aspirin daily. Diabetics only tended to turn to aspirin once they develop heart disease. Less than 40% of diabetics who smoked, had high blood pressure or high cholesterol took aspirin. Researchers believe that doctors need to take a more proactive role in advising diabetic patients to use aspirin.
