Medical News Summary (summary of medical news story as reported by Scotsman): Bowel cancer causes 16,000 deaths in the UK. Early detection can save 80% of patients but 50% are not diagnosed until the later stages making their prognosis much poorer. A man with rectal bleeding was initially misdiagnosed by two doctors as having piles. A third doctor finally diagnosed bowel cancer by which time it had spread significantly. The government is trying to devise a plan to make screening more available to a wider part of the community. Because of the nature of the testing though, compliance could be poor.
