Thus it is important that all health care providers have a good level of communication with their patients and advise them of any appropriate screening. Research shows that African-American people who reported good communication with their doctor were three times more likely to have colon cancer screening than those with poor communication. It is recommended that people over 50 have a blood in stool test each year, a flexible sigmoidoscopy exam every 5 years and a colonoscopy every 10 years. Analysis of study subjects found that less than half had their provider recommend screening and les than a third had undergone colon cancer screening. Furthermore, subjects who had a greater knowledge of colon cancer were more likely to undergo screening.
