Medical News Summary (summary of medical news story as reported by PR Newswire): Disturbing studies have found that many HIV patients often use over the counter and prescription medication to treat heartburn, gastroesophageal reflux disease and ulcers. The resulting increase in stomach acidity may make antiretroviral therapies less effective. Of the study subjects, 62% suffered from heartburn, 30% from GERD and 13% from ulcers as a result of their HIV medication. Physicians need to be aware of this drug-drug reaction and need to make their patients aware of it also.
