A study involving 8,353 women with cardiovascular disease found that only a third of them were receiving the level of cholesterol treatment recommended by the American Heart Association. Furthermore, very few of them were given prescription niacin to control their high-density lipoproteins or fibrate therapy to control their triglycerides.
