Medical News Summary (summary of medical news story as reported by Express Newsline): The red scratchy bumps associated with hives occur when immune substances enter the bloodstream and release histamine. The histamine finds its way into blood cells which causes the blood vessels to swell and leak. Natural remedies that can relieve the itch associated with hives includes: soaking in a lukewarm oatmeal bath, applying an ice cube for several minutes, staying cool, wearing loose clothing and consuming parsley which can inhibit histamine. Stinging nettle medication may also help as can an external application of jewelweed. Hives can be exacerbated or caused by eating tomatoes, shellfish, strawberries, citrus fruits, nuts, licorice, blue cheese, aspirin, sunscreen, medications, exercise, hot showers or tight clothing. If natural treatments don’t work, antihistamines can alleviate symptoms. If hives persist even after treatment or leave a bruise, further tests should be done to rule out conditions such as thyroid disease. Hives can occur in the throat as well which can affect breathing in which case medical attention needs to be sought straight away.
