Medical News Summary (summary of medical news story as reported by Medindia): Investigations by researchers has led them to discover that hyperglycemia (high blood sugar) can increase mortality rates in both diabetic and non-diabetic patients. In fact, critically ill non-diabetic patients had higher mortality rates associated with their increased blood sugar level than diabetic patients. Thus it is important that hyperglycemia be closely monitored and treated in critically ill patients. The lowest mortality rate was in those who had sugar levels below the normal range. Hyperglycemia can be caused by insulin resistance, impaired glucose metabolism, medications or some nutritional supplements.
