Medical News Summary (summary of medical news story as reported by CTV): A spokes man for the Heart and Stroke Foundation claims that the five months it can sometimes take from initial identification to diagnosis confirmation and treatment is far too long. He claims that hypertension needs to be treated quickly in order to provide the best long-term outcome for the patient. Previously, it was a requirement that the patient had to have 5 blood pressure readings at 5 separate doctors visits to verify the results but now doctors can use readings taken by patients using a home blood pressure monitor. For extremely high blood pressure, it is recommended that treatment be initiated on the first visit. The Foundation claims that only 13% of the 1 in 5 adults with high blood pressure are receiving treatment and have their blood pressure under control. Untreated hypertension can cause stroke, heart attack and kidney disease. Treatment of hypertension should involve anti-hypertensive medication, cholesterol-lowering statins and blood thinners.
