Medical News Summary (summary of medical news story as reported by Vail Daily): Hyperthyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland becomes overactive and causes the overproduction of thyroid hormone. Hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland produces insufficient or no thyroid hormone. Hypothyroidism is often caused by insufficient iodine in diet. Thyroid disease can occur at any age, even newborns but a simple test can determine its presence. The symptoms of hyperthyroidism include high blood pressure, anxiety, irritability, fatigue, tremors, unexplained weight loss or gain, skin changes, thinning of hair, hair loss, thinning of bones, intolerance of hot and cold, irregular menses and infertility. Untreated, the condition can have serious consequences. Hyperthyroidism is mostly caused by Grave’s disease which occurs in 2% of US women. Treatment options are surgery, radioactive iodine or long-term medication to suppress the thyroid. Treatment often results in hypothyroidism which requires permanent hormone replacement therapy.
