The liver diseases that can occur in diabetics include nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, cirrhosis of the liver and hepatocellular carcinoma. Diabetics also face an increased risk of hepatitis C and acute liver failure. Metabolic syndrome, alcohol and hepatitis C are the biggest culprits for chronic liver disease in the US. Exercise and weight loss can alleviate nonalcoholic fatty liver disease but thiazolidinediones, metformin and 3-hydroxy-3-methyhlglutaryl coenzyme A inhibitors are being developed as possible treatments for the condition. Diabetes mellitus is the fifth leading cause of death in the US and affects about 17 million people.
