Proton-pump inhibitors doubled the risk and histamine antagonists increased the risk by nearly two thirds. Increased of other respiratory infections such as influenza and bronchitis has also been linked to use of heartburn drugs. Heartburn drugs are often easily available thus there is no monitoring of its use. Patients need to be aware of the risks of long-term use of the drugs.
