Medical News Summary (summary of medical news story as reported by Tuscaloosanews): Symptoms of lupus can appear and disappear many times during a persons lifetime and diagnosis is difficult as the symptoms presented can be similar to many other conditions. Over 19 years, one woman has suffered from petit mal seizures, pleurisy in lungs, temporor-mandibular joint syndrome, mitral valve prolapse, thyroid disease, glaucoma and cataracts as well as other conditions. Lupus is an autoimmune disease where the body produces antibodies that can attack any part of the body. Women are particularly prone to lupus with 90% of sufferers being women. American, Native American and Asian women are the groups most prone to lupus. Lupus increases the risk of cardiovascular problems, fatigue, migraines, arthritis, anemia, pregnancy complications, miscarriages, kidney disorders, lung disorders, intestinal disorder and skin disorders. Most people suffer from more than one symptom at a time. Treatment involves managing symptoms through medications such as Plaquenil, CellCept and Prednisone but many people still suffer a reduced quality of life. One woman suddenly suffered from transverse myelitis after being diagnosed with lupus for 6 months. She also suffers from colitis, arthritis, pain and weight loss caused by lupus. Sufferers can’t predict what part of the body will be affected next and when. Another woman tells how she waited for 6 years before she received an accurate lupus diagnosis. She believes that her symptoms started even decades before her diagnosis. She also believes that the condition has genetic links as her brother also suffered from an autoimmune disorder called polymyocytis. Yet another woman had her lupus diagnosed quickly because her mother had already been diagnosed with an autoimmune condition called scleroderma.
