Medical News Summary (summary of medical news story as reported by Summit Daily News): A 39 woman developed symptoms such as diarrhea, vomiting and fever when she was 36 ½ weeks pregnant. The doctor who examined her told her she had the flu and gave her some medication to treat her nausea. The women again went to the doctor when her symptoms did not abate. She was admitted to hospital where the nurse gave her Tylenol which failed to bring her temperature down. She was eventually stabilized. A couple of hours later the baby died and the mother died not long after from a cardiac arrest. It was alleged that the mother had a bacterial infection of the uterus. This infection combined with medication to prevent contractions allegedly triggered the heart attack. The medical negligence case is in court. The defendants claim that the woman had a heart condition which is usually not diagnosed until death. The plaintiffs claim that antibiotics could have saved her life. They claim that the infection combined with the heart abnormality lead to her death. The husband is seeking $1.5 million in damages.
