Medical News Summary (summary of medical news story as reported by The Leaf Chronicle): Depression can be triggered by death in the family, illness, loss of a job, relationship break down and other stressful events. Many people and society in general see depression as an embarrassing condition and often ignore the signs. Depression can be cured by counseling, family support, antidepressants or even time. The symptoms of depression include sleeplessness or oversleeping, poor appetite, decreased libido, decreased self-esteem, fatigue, persistent nervousness, persistent tension and feeling ‘depressed’. Very depressed feelings can trigger suicidal thoughts. The CDC reported 31,655 suicides in America in 2002. It is estimated that up to 1 in 16 people diagnosed with depression will commit suicide eventually and two out of three suicide victims were in the grips of depression during the event. The symptoms of suicide risk associated with depression include: extreme hopelessness, lack of interest in previously enjoyable activities, increased anxiety, panic attacks, insomnia, history of suicide attempts, verbalizing suicidal thoughts, irritability and agitation.
