Study participants who took Rimonabrant lost nearly four times as much weight as those on a placebo. The downside is that the weight loss is maintained only as long as the drug is taken – weight is regained once the patient stops taking the drug. This is expensive for the consumer but good for the drug company. It was also noted that the drug improved HDL levels and reduced triglyceride levels. It was also more responsive to insulin. Thus the drug may also be effective in curbing cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Side effects include depression, anxiety and irritability. The drug is also able to make quitting smoking easier. Approval for the drug will be sought next year.
