Traditionally, screening for bowel cancer has not received high participation rates due to the requirement of delivering a fairly large stool sample. The new screening test requires only a brush to be brushed over the stool or a small dipstick can be used to obtain the sample. The brush or dipstick can then be sent for testing. Initial trials show that this collection technique delivers a much higher participation rate. Australia aims to have every adult over 55 and every indigenous adult over 45 screened for bowel cancer at least every two years.
