Medical News Summary (summary of medical news story as reported by The Australian): Bowel cancer is the most prevalent internal cancer in Australia and is the second biggest killer after lung cancer. Traditionally, screening for bowel cancer has not received high participation rates due to the requirement of delivering a fairly large stool sample. The new screening test requires only a brush to be brushed over the stool or a small dipstick can be used to obtain the sample. The brush or dipstick can then be sent for testing. Initial trials show that this collection technique delivers a much higher participation rate. Australia aims to have every adult over 55 and every indigenous adult over 45 screened for bowel cancer at least every two years.
