Medical News Summary (summary of medical news story as reported by Reuters - Health): Researchers claim that the new breast cancer drugs, aromatase inhibitors (Arimidex), were more effective than the tradition tamoxifen at prevent a cancer reoccurrence or spread. Aromatase inhibitors also claim to have fewer side effects. Tamoxifen has fewer side effects than chemotherapy but can increase the risk of endometrial cancer, stroke, vaginal bleeding and bloating. Experts however, claim that the new drugs were effective in only about half of women. It can only be used in post menopausal women or if the cancer isn’t estrogen receptor positive as aromatase inhibitors operate by reducing estrogen levels.
