Relatively new prescription drugs have recently been closely scrutinized but over the counter drugs and generic prescription drugs tend to avoid this scrutiny as they are generally believed to be safe. Recently, Aleve (pain reliever) has been identified as causing increased risk of heart problems in some people even though it has confidently been used as an over the counter medication for the last 30 years.
