Medical News Summary (summary of medical news story as reported by News Target Network): It has come to light that little is known about the long term use of older medications and over the counter drugs which have been assumed to be safe without any real trials done to prove this. Relatively new prescription drugs have recently been closely scrutinized but over the counter drugs and generic prescription drugs tend to avoid this scrutiny as they are generally believed to be safe. Recently, Aleve (pain reliever) has been identified as causing increased risk of heart problems in some people even though it has confidently been used as an over the counter medication for the last 30 years.
