Medical News Summary (summary of medical news story as reported by Senior Journal): Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of death in the US and researchers want everybody over 50 to have a colonoscopy as digital fecal occult blood tests left 95% of cancers undiagnosed. Fecal occult blood tests done at home left more than 76% of cancer undiagnosed. Early detection of precancerous polyps through colonoscopies or flexible sigmoidoscopies allows early treatment which can prevent colorectal cancers developing. Another screening test for colorectal cancer is a barium enema. Patients need to discuss with their health care provider which screening test best suits their needs and risk levels.
