Medical News Summary (summary of medical news story as reported by Reuters Health): Researchers have found that a diabetes drug called Avandia helps obese women with polycystic ovary syndrome to start ovulating again. Eleven of the twelve women in the study group had success with this treatment within three months. Metformin, another diabetes drug, does not have the same effect and also caused a high level of gastrointestinal side effects. PCOS is associated with high levels of male hormone and Avandia was able to significantly reduce these levels as well as increase insulin sensitivity. Researchers point out that Avandia should not be used during pregnancy.
