Medical News Summary (summary of medical news story as reported by Reuters Health): Earlier research has indicated that aspirin may be less effective for preventing vascular events in diabetics than non-diabetics. Thus, there is promise in the new research which has found that a drug called picotamide is thins blood more effectively than aspirin in diabetics. In the study, there was a 45% lower mortality rate for the diabetic subjects who used picotamide as opposed to aspirin. Picotamide also caused fewer gastric side effects. However, picotamide is competing against ACE inhibitors developed since the study began.
