Medical News Summary (summary of medical news story as reported by Reuters Health): A high level of glucose monitoring before and during pregnancy in women who have type 1 diabetes improves their chances of a good outcome. A study indicates that only one third of type 1 diabetics monitored their glucose level daily when they conceived. Better glucose control reduced the risk of infant mortality and birth defects. In comparing births to diabetic mothers to those of the general population, it was found that diabetics had an infant mortality rate of 3.1% compared to 0.75%, a stillborn rate of 2.1% compared to 0.45% and a birth defect rate of 5% compared to 2.8%. Of those who had an adverse outcome, 22% monitored their blood glucose every day at the time of conception compared to 35% of those who had a good outcome.
