Medical News Summary (summary of medical news story as reported by The Observer): China faces the world’s highest suicide rates with 22 suicides per 100,000 people which is 50% higher than the world average. In rural areas, the rates are even higher with 30 women per 100,000 committing suicide. Women are worldwide are more at risk of suicide. One of the problems in rural areas is that professionals are not adequately trained to save people who have attempted suicide. Another problem is that depression is unrecognized by many who have never even heard of the condition. Also, depression is stigmatized by those aware of it and anyway, most people are too poor to afford treatment.
