Medical News Summary (summary of medical news story as reported by Yahoo - Health): A study by a Chicago university showed that most men with prostate cancer undergoing androgen-deprivation therapy or hormone therapy did not have osteoporosis treatment or prevention. Hormone therapy in men undergoing hormone therapy treatment has previously been linked with an increased risk of osteoporosis. In the study group, only 14.7 received osteoporosis treatment, 8.7% were screened for osteoporosis and only 4.9% were prescribed bisphospohonate to prevent bone loss. It was found that primary care physicians were most likely to manage the osteoporosis risk and cancer specialists were the least likely. The risk factors for male osteoporosis include alcoholism, smoking, hormonal changes due to age, some medications and some prostate cancer treatment medications.
