Medical News Summary (summary of medical news story as reported by Eurekalert): Leptin is a substance released by fat cells and it lets the body know the status of the body with respect to energy requirements. It helps the body to determine normal body weight and glucose balance. However, researchers have found that low levels of leptin leads mice to become obese, develop obesity and inactivity. It was determined that about 22% of the leptin’s effects on body weight was determined by leptin receptors in a brain region called the hypothalamic arcuate nucleus. Thus new therapies may be developed to treat or prevent such conditions as diabetes and obesity based on the discoveries.
