Medical News Summary (summary of medical news story as reported by Health Day): Researchers have found a relationship between the level of selenium in blood and colon cancer. Higher levels of selenium have been associated with lower incidence of colon cancer and perhaps even lung and prostate cancer. High selenium levels have been found to be associated with a 34% lower risk of developing colon cancer. Researchers believe that people with low selenium intake may receive benefits by increasing their intake but those with an already high intake won’t gain anything by increasing their selenium intake. Further studies are needed to see if selenium can act as a preventative medication.
