Medical News Summary (summary of medical news story as reported by PR Newswire): The FDA has approved a self-administered anemia-screening test (AnemiaPro). The product will be available free of cost to people who face a high anemia risk due to chronic kidney disease (eg diabetics or those with high blood pressure). The device is single use and is meant as a preliminary diagnosis to be followed up by a physician who can determine if chronic kidney disease is the cause. Anemia is a common but underdiagnosed symptom of chronic kidney disease. About 1 in 9 adult Americans have the condition but most people aren’t aware of the deterioration of their kidneys. Anemia can cause tiredness, shortness of breath, dizziness, reduced ability to concentrate and lethargy. Early diagnosis and treatment improves prognosis. Treatment of anemia due to chronic kidney disease can involve medication such as PROCRIT which is administered as an injection. PROCRIT is not advisable for people with uncontrolled high blood pressure as some of the side effects of the drug are increased blood pressure, headache, joint pain, nausea and increased risk of blood clots and seizures.
