Medical News Summary (summary of medical news story as reported by Medical News Today): A study reported in the JAMA claims that 20% of sampled Ayurvedic herbal medicine contained toxic levels of metals such as lead, mercury and arsenic. 80% of Indian’s (population of 1 billion) use the medical system Ayurveda which consists of herbal medicine products (HMPs). Ayurvedic HMP’s are promoted in Western countries as well and are marketed as dietary supplements. The study was initiated due to reports of lead poisoning by people taking the supplements.
